When Seminary Leaders Put On a Headset: Immersive Learning at the Pathways Expo

"Deans, faculty, and project directors from across the Pathways cohort put on a headset... Several stood in silence... then pulled off the headset and asked: 'How did you build this, and could we do it too?'... It happened because your team collaborated with us. I'm grateful for the effort, for the technology... for taking seriously our conviction that pedagogy drives technology, not the other way around."

Jesús Rodríguez-Cortés, Instructional Mentor & Project Lead, Roberts Wesleyan University

Online education has widened access across higher education, and access alone does not create engagement. Recorded lectures, documents, and discussion boards offer flexibility, yet students often log in, finish a task, and log out without feeling part of a shared experience. For fields built around dialogue, reflection, and lived context, that gap matters.

Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan University is addressing it directly. With a $1 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative, the seminary is redesigning its online programs around experience and not only delivery. CampusXR is proud to collaborate on that work.

Pedagogy Drives Technology

The seminary began with a conviction that shaped every decision. Pedagogy drives technology, not the other way around. Tools were shaped around what students and pastors need, and the technology was chosen to serve those needs.

The seminary's vision gives a clear picture of what that means. Students walk through virtual ministry settings, visit biblical sites in 360°, and practice pastoral care in safe, guided spaces that connect them with mentors and peers around the world. Each of those experiences starts with a learning purpose.

What Immersion Adds

Immersive tools place learners inside content. Students explore where they once observed. They experience presence where they once experienced distance. Moments of discovery come closer to what happens in person, even when a student joins from home.

Across projects, immersive learning supports deeper engagement, stronger emotional connection, and broader access for remote and nontraditional learners. It also creates digital experiences that can evolve over time without being rebuilt.

The Room Went Quiet

The team brought the work to the Pathways Expo in Indianapolis, where leaders from across the Pathways cohort put on headsets and explored it firsthand. Deans, faculty, and project directors took part. Several stood in silence. When they took the headsets off, they asked how the experience was built and whether their institutions could do the same.

That reaction says something about the pedagogy as much as the technology. People were not reacting to a feature. They were reacting to a learning experience that felt intentional, human, and participatory. The response was enthusiastic and produced strong institutional interest.

What Year One Builds

The first year of the initiative focuses on foundational tools, which keeps the emphasis on long-term value. Two components anchor the work.

  • Guided walkthroughs: An Interactive 360° Historical Walkthrough Tool lets faculty lead students through real spaces with story overlays and video, so exploration stays purposeful.
  • Shared spaces: Six 3D collaborative environments, including a chapel, a classroom, and a prayer circle, bring learners together through avatars, spatial audio, and real-time interaction.
  • Flexible access: Both are designed for browsers and VR, so students can join in the way that suits them.

No training or platform deployment takes place in Year One. The phase exists so that the tools are ready for future pilots and long-term growth.

Why This Matters for Higher Education

The seminary's experience points to a wider lesson. When an institution begins with its learning goals, immersive technology becomes a way to serve them. Faculty gain new ways to teach, students gain new ways to connect, and the institution gains tools that can grow with its programs.

For any institution asking the same question those deans asked at the Expo, the starting point is the same. Decide what learners need to experience, then choose the technology that delivers it.

CampusXR partners with education providers on immersive learning that puts pedagogy first. To explore what that could look like for your institution, visit campusxr.org.
